Q: What types of shag lessons are offered by NVSC?

A.: NVSC offers a beginner course (4 weeks), a novice course (4 weeks) and an intermediate course (8 weeks).

 

Q: When are the lessons taught?

A: All lessons are taught on Wednesday nights from 7:30-8:15 PM

 

Beginner, novice, and intermediate lessons are taught every Wednesday night (see the  NVSC monthly newsletter, “The Shag Rag” for dates)

 

Q: Where are the lessons taught?

A: All lessons are taught at Rene’s Supper Club, 3251 Old Lee Highway, Fairfax, VA.

 

Q: How much do the lessons cost?

A: The beginner lessons are free for everyone. The novice and intermediate lessons are FREE for NVSC members.

 

    - Annual membership: Costs $20.00 and lasts one full year from the date paid

    - Cover Charge:  There is a $6.00 cover charge to get in at Rene’s Supper Club on Wednesdays.

 

Q: Do I need a partner?

A: No, all lessons are taught so that the steps may be learned without a partner

Beginner Coursethis course has four lessons taught in sequence. The emphasis of this course is to teach the fundamental steps of the Carolina Shag – the basic step, the shag start, female turn, male turn, half turn, side pass, and triple basic.

 

   Novice Course this course has four lessons taught in sequence. The emphasis of this course is to teach students to master a variety of steps including the pivot, tuck turns, and variations of the shag basic step which they will need to progress to the intermediate level course.

 

Intermediate Coursethis course is divided into two 4 week sets, Level A, and B. The emphasis of this course is to encourage students to continue working on the fundamental steps taught in the beginner and novice courses while introducing increasingly complex footwork used in the Carolina Shag including stutter steps, leans, boogie walks, and pivot variations.
